The Challis National Forest and Sawtooth National Forest converge in this high-altitude survey of Custer County, Idaho. The landscape is defined by the steep drainages of Big Casino Creek and Little Casino Creek, which flow northward toward the Salmon River corridor. Along the river, recreational and industrial footprints are visible through the Salmon River Campground and a nearby Mine.

A network of trails and a lone Jeep Trail provide access to the interior, where the Casino Lakes, Garland Lakes, and Rough Lake occupy glacially carved basins. Evidence of early backcountry aviation is preserved with the Rough Creek Airport located at a high bend in Rough Creek. Elevations culminate at Lookout Mtn (Chase Lookout) and Prospect Point, providing a record of the region's wilderness management and survey history before the modern era.
