Challis National Forest dominates this high-altitude landscape in Custer County, where the southern reaches of the Pahsimeroi Mountains meet the northern edge of the Lost River Range. The terrain is defined by extreme relief, rising from the drainage of Shotgun Creek in the north to the distinctive high points of Grouse Peak and the White Hills further south.

A network of mountain access routes including Custer Rd and Lawson Creek Rd provides passage through the many drainages that carve these ranges, such as Leaton Gulch and Gerry Gulch.
