Somerset and Mount Vernon sit along the northern edge of the flooded valley created by Mississinewa Lake. This landscape in southern Wabash County is defined by the heavy modification of the Mississinewa River corridor, where the expansive reservoir now covers former bottomlands. To the east, the river maintains its natural course near the distinctive terrain of The Hogback, winding through a network of smaller tributaries including Grant Creek and Pee Dee Creek.

Evidence of the area's earlier overland routes remains in the labeling of the Old Slocum Trail and Frances Slocum Trail, which flank the water. To the northeast, the small settlement of Treaty marks a crossing over Treaty Creek. The map provides a look at the intersection of modern recreation and water management with the historic road names that predate the reservoir's construction, such as Pearson Mill Road.
