Mount Hood National Forest and the Clackamas Wilderness define this high-elevation region of the Cascade Range. The terrain is a complex network of steep drainages, centered around Soosap Peak and Rock Canyon. This 2023 survey illustrates the hydrological importance of the area, where the headwaters of the South Fork Clackamas River and the North Fork Molalla River originate from alpine basins and small glacial-remnant lakes like Emerald Lake and Cougar Lake.
