South River Peak and Beautiful Mountain dominate the high-elevation terrain of this Mineral County quadrangle, where the Continental Divide creates a natural boundary between the Rio Grande National Forest and San Juan National Forest. This remote alpine landscape is primarily accessible via a network of backcountry paths, including the Continental Divide (Pagosa Ranger District) and the Highline Trail.

Evidence of historical activity is found in the scattered remains of a Mine and a single Cabin situated near the headwaters of Goose Creek. Water features are abundant throughout the Weminuche Wilderness, from the alpine Goose Lake and Archuleta Lake to the geothermal Hot Spring along the West Fork San Juan River. The presence of Beaver Meadow suggests the seasonal natural cycles of the valley floors beneath Sawtooth Mountain.
