Ottawa National Forest dominates the landscape of this region on the border of Ontonagon and Houghton counties. The hydrological network is the defining characteristic of this interior wilderness, centered on the East Branch Ontonagon River as it winds southward toward Sparrow Rapids. This section of the Upper Peninsula is defined by its complex drainage systems, where numerous named tributaries including Onion Cr, Skoglund Cr, and Beaver Cr feed into the larger river system.
