The town of Spirit Lake and the village of Orleans anchor this 2013 survey of Iowa's Great Lakes region. The landscape is defined by the narrow isthmus between Spirit Lake and East Okoboji Lake, where the Orleans State Fish Hatchery and the Pioneer Beach Campground highlight the area's long-standing connection to outdoor recreation and conservation. The shoreline is densely populated with a variety of seasonal and year-round communities, including McClelland Beach, Ainsworth Beach, and Martha Yarns Memorial Beach.
