The San Rafael River meanders across the northern portion of this landscape, carving through the expansive San Rafael Valley. This 2011 USGS survey shows a network of remote corridors including Gillis Ranch Rd and Dugout Creek Rd which navigate the arid terrain. The southeastern corner is defined by the geological prominence of the Red Reef and the deep incision of Spring Canyon. Numerous ephemeral drainages, such as Cottonwood Wash and Dugout Wash, indicate the region's flash-flood hydrology and erosion patterns. The sparse infrastructure, consisting primarily of named desert tracks like Sand Rd and Spring Canyon Rd, reflects the area's isolation and continued use for ranching and resource access in Emery County.
