About this map

The dramatic southwestern tip of Marthas Vineyard is defined by the high, layered silts of Gay Head Cliffs and the maritime outposts of Gay Head and Chilmark. By the early 1970s, this landscape maintained a quiet, rural character with isolated schoolhouses like the Gay Head Sch and Menemsha Sch serving small coastal settlements. Inland, the topography rises toward Prospect Hill and Peaked Hill, while the coast is a sequence of salt ponds and barrier beaches, notably Squibnocket Pond and Menemsha Pond.
