The St Johns settlement serves as the central hub of this late 19th-century survey of northeastern Arizona Territory. Situated at the junction of the Little Colorado River and the Zuñi River, the region is defined by a landscape of high-altitude basins and volcanic peaks. To the northwest, the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad skirts the edge of the Petrified Forest, following the course of the Puerco River.
