Kootenai National Forest meets the international border in this high-altitude survey of northwestern Montana. The landscape is defined by the Ten Lakes Scenic Area, where the Ten Lakes Basin sits just south of the line dividing British Columbia and Montana. A prominent Lookout Stahl Peak stands atop Stahl Peak, serving as a vital observation point overlooking the Wigwam River drainage and the steep slopes of Gibralter Ridge. Extensive networks of Pack Trails provide the only access through this roadless terrain, connecting points like Therriault Pass and Big Therriault Lake. The drainage patterns here are complex, with headwaters for Wam Creek and Clarence Creek carving deep basins below summits such as Mount Gibralter and Mount Scotty. These trails and high peaks illustrate the era's focus on fire lookout management and wilderness preservation in the remote Rockies.
