The Snake River defines this portion of the border between Whitman and Columbia counties, carving through the high plateau of southeastern Washington. The river's path is heavily influenced by the presence of McGuire Shoal and the modern infrastructure of the Little Goose Lock and Dam-Airport. To the south, the Tucannon River winds through the valley floor, passing the settlement of Starbuck.
