The Sabine River defines the border between Louisiana and Texas in this late-twentieth-century study of the Calcasieu Parish and Newton County line. The settlement of Starks is the primary hub on the eastern side of the river, anchored by the Kansas City Southern railroad line and surrounded by several local burial grounds including St Mary Cem and Miller Cem. Across the water in Texas, the communities of Deweyville and Ruliff sit near the river's edge, where the land is characterized by a complex network of waterways such as Patterson Slough and Cutoff Bayou.

Conservation and recreation dominate the southern reaches of the map within the Sabine Island State Wildlife Management Area. This low-lying riverine landscape is protected by an extensive Levee and Diversion System, managing the flow around Wembly Island and Indian Lake.
