The Water Pocket Fold monocline defines this corner of the Colorado Plateau, where the high desert terrain of southern Utah is preserved within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Capitol Reef National Park. The landscape is characterized by extreme verticality and deep drainage systems, most notably Stevens Canyon and the winding course of Halls Creek and Narrows. The boundary between Garfield and Kane Counties bisects the southern half of the map, cutting across a region of complex geology and minimal human infrastructure. Hydrological features like Grand Gulch and Millers Cr carve into the sandstone layers, creating the intricate network of canyons and ridges that have historically challenged travelers and ranchers in this part of the Escalante river basin.
