Stewart Lake National Wildlife Refuge anchors this section of Slope County, centered on the waters of Stewart Lake itself. This prairie landscape is primarily defined by the federally protected reaches of the Little Missouri National Grassland, which surrounds the refuge and extends across the Slope Co Bowman Co border. The drainage of the E Fork Deep Cr meanders through the southern portion of the quadrangle, illustrating the subtle hydrology of the North Dakota badlands and plains. A grid of rural routes, including Farm To Market Rd, 74th St Sw, and 149th Ave Sw, provides access to these public lands and the scattered agricultural holdings that dot the section lines. The map documents the relationship between wildlife conservation and public grazing lands in the early twenty-first century.
