Fremont National Forest defines this high-country landscape in south-central Oregon, where the borders of Klamath, Lake, and Modoc counties meet. This 1960 field-checked survey reveals a backcountry network of ranching and forestry outposts, including Hunt Ranch, Lapham Ranch, and the Devaul Ranch located along the winding Barnes Valley. The water management of the era is evident through numerous small-scale catchments and reservoirs such as Big Swamp Reservoir, Little Squaw Flat Reservoir, and Arkansas Reservoir, which served the livestock interests at Oriana Corrals and across Strawberry Flat. The presence of the Barnes Valley Guard Sta and State Line Guard Sta underscores the active management of these timber and range lands. Rising above the valleys are prominent summits like Strawberry Butte and Harp Mtn, while the southern reaches descend toward the volcanic landscape of Dog Valley and a local Cinder Pit.
