About this map

Black Pine Peak and the high ridges of the Sawtooth National Forest dominate this high-desert landscape in southern Idaho. In the late 1950s, the small settlement of Strevell served as a key point of activity near the Utah border, featuring a Landing Field and a Beacon to guide regional travel. The eastern slopes of the mountains show a history of mineral exploration, marked by the Ruth Mine, Silver Hills Mine, and Tallman Mine, alongside numerous unnamed prospects tucked into Mineral Gulch. Between the high peaks and the Raft River Valley, the land is etched with deep canyons like Eightmile Canyon and Sixmile Canyon. Administrative presence in the backcountry is noted at the Gunnell Guard Station, while numerous water sources like Hidden Rock Spring and Black Pine Spring underscore the importance of water in this arid environment.
