Sturgis serves as the central hub for this early 1970s survey, situated at the junction of the Gulf Central Illinois railroad and several local roads. The landscape transitions from the developed grid of the town into the southern reaches of the Tombigbee National Forest. Numerous country churches and burial sites, including Wake Forest Ch, Mt Zion Ch, and the Old Sturgis Cem, are scattered across the surrounding hills and along the drainages of Sand Creek and Red Bank Creek.

A notable landmark is the Tombigbee Lookout Tower, which provides a focal point for the forest management area near the Winston Co and Oktibbeha Co border. Evidence of local industry and resource extraction is visible through several labeled Sandpit locations and a Gravel Pit. The southern portion of the quadrangle is defined by the winding course of the Noxubee River and its many tributaries, such as Bearfoot Branch and Panther Creek, illustrating the well-watered timberlands that characterize this part of Mississippi.
