Baird Glacier dominates this high-altitude landscape along the international boundary between Alaska and British Columbia. Surveyed in the early 1960s, the terrain is defined by massive ice fields and the deep crevasses of the Witches Cauldron. This portion of the Tongass National Forest showcases significant landmarks used for boundary demarcation, most notably the prominent Devils Thumb Boundary Peak 71 and the distinctive Cats Ears.

Glacial movement and meltwater drainage patterns are visible through the course of Scenery Creek and Cascade Creek, which flow from the southern reaches of the Patterson Glacier. The presence of The Oasis amidst the Oasis Glacier suggests a rare break in the ice-dominated topography. To the south, the Cosmos Range marks the edge of this complex glacial system, providing a detailed look at the 1961 state of these perennial ice features.
