Summer Lake and its surrounding alkali landscape define this 2014 survey, where the Great Basin meets the eastern slopes of the Oregon high country. The small settlement of Summer Lake is situated along the Fremont Hwy (OR-31), providing a vital link through this arid region. To the west, the terrain rises sharply into the Fremont National Forest, dominated by the prominent Dead Indian Rim and Dead Indian Mtn. This dramatic elevation change is marked by numerous water sources critical to the local ecology, including Dead Indian Spring, Bagley Spring, and Bottle Spring.
