The alkaline waters of Summer Lake and the Ana River define this high desert basin in Lake County, Oregon. To the west, the landscape rises sharply into the Fremont National Forest, dominated by topographic landmarks like Dead Indian Mtn and Dead Indian Rim. This transition from the forested heights of the rim down to the marshy lowlands is reflected in the extensive Summer Lake Migratory Waterfowl and Game Management Area, which protects vital wetland habitats including Dutchy Lake and the Jacks Lakes. The settlement of Summer Lake sits at the base of these hills, where local history is anchored at the Summer Lake Cem. Water management is a primary theme of the area's development, evidenced by the Summer Lake LD Canal, Ana Reservoir, and numerous named springs such as Bagley Spring and Foster Spring that support the arid basin's ecosystem.
