East Carbon City and the neighboring community of Sunnyside sit at the mouth of the Book Cliffs, where the industrial legacy of the Carbon County coalfields is etched into the landscape. This 2014 survey documents the clustered residential centers of Dragerton, Sunnydale, and Columbia, all connected by Ut-123 and Ut-124. The map reveals a transition from the structured street grids of these settlements to the dramatic topography of the surrounding plateaus, including Whitmore Canyon and Slaughter Canyon.

Water management is central to the area's development, evidenced by the Grassy Trail Reservoir and the course of Grassy Trail Cr as it flows past the northern edge of the settlements.
