The Middle Fork John Day River winds through this section of the Malheur National Forest, where the settlements of Galena and Susanville anchor a landscape defined by gold-mining history and high-elevation hydrology. The terrain transitions from the Greenhorn Mountains in the northeast, marked by Chattanooga Mtn and Onion Gulch, down into the deep drainages of Elk Creek and North Fork Elk Creek. This contemporary survey reveals a network of springs and meadows, such as Sky Scraper Spring and Gem Meadow, that have supported local life for generations.
