The river serves as the natural boundary for Independence County as it winds past Lockheart and the elevated ground of Turkey Hill. To the east, the terrain transitions into a highly managed agricultural plain, crisscrossed by drainage systems such as Tuckerman Ditch and Hatchet Ditch that support the fertile bottomlands near Tuckerman.
