Piute Canyon carves a significant path through this corner of the Navajo Nation, defining a landscape dominated by high tablelands and seasonal drainage. The Piute Creek waterway winds through the floor of the canyon, bordered to the east by the elevated Piute Mesa and to the south by the broad expanse of the Shonto Plateau. Human presence in this high-desert environment is represented primarily by N Rte 16, which traverses the southern portion of the quadrangle. This 2011 survey illustrates the topographical relationship between the deep canyon systems and the surrounding plateaus that characterize this part of northern Arizona.
