L T Murray State Wildlife Area and the Wenatchee National Forest dominate this central Washington terrain, where complex water management systems meet a landscape of deep canyons. The northern edge features a network of irrigation works, including the Cascade Canal, North Branch Canal, and South Branch Canal, as they exit the Yakima River system to serve the agricultural lands of Thorp Prairie.

The central and southern portions are defined by an intricate series of drainages, most notably Taneum Creek and the North Fork Manastash Creek. Evidence of local industry and transit is scattered throughout, from the Landing Strip near Whisky Flats to numerous Quarries and Gravel Pits. Significant local landmarks such as Taneum Meadow and the path of The Mountains To Sound Greenway illustrate the intersection of conservation and recreation in the Kittitas Valley at the start of the 21st century.
