The Neches River winds through a dense network of oxbows and bottomlands at the convergence of Hardin, Jasper, and Tyler counties. This riparian landscape is dominated by the Big Thicket National Preserve, where the river's shifting course has created numerous named water bodies like Horseshoe Lake, Clear Lake, and the namesake Tater Patch Lake. These features, along with Brier Cane Break Lake and Sally Withers Lake, illustrate a complex hydrologic system where sloughs and creeks such as Black Cr and Maple Slough feed into the primary river channel.
