About this map

Old Fort Tejon stands at the northern gateway of the mountain corridor where the San Joaquin Valley meets the high peaks, surveyed at the dawn of the twentieth century. This rugged interior of Southern California is defined by the critical junction of the Tehachapi Mountains and the Liebre Mountains, a landscape where early settlement followed the reliable water of Castaic Creek and the thermal waters of Sespe Hot Springs. The map documents a sparsely populated transition zone between the high desert of the Antelope Valley and the deep canyons of what is now the Angeles National Forest.
