Thorofare Buttes and the high peaks of the Absaroka Range define this high-altitude landscape along the border of the Shoshone National Forest and Teton National Forest. This 2017 survey details a wilderness environment shaped by dramatic elevation changes, where named features reflect both the geography and early exploration of Park County. High passes provide the primary movement through the terrain, including Ishawooa Pass, Rampart Pass, and Deer Creek Pass. Several established backcountry routes are documented, such as the Ishawooa Trail and Butte Creek Trail, which navigate the drainages of Ishawooa Cr and N Fork Butte Cr. The presence of Petrified Ridge and the broad Wapiti Ridge illustrates the geological complexity of this section of the Rockies, while Spruce Meadow identifies one of the few named clearings among the steep slopes.
