The confluence of the Arkansas River and the expansive rail operations at La Junta anchor this late-nineteenth-century survey of the high plains. The landscape is defined by the critical transit corridor of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, which follows the drainage of Timpas Creek southwest through Benton and Timpas. This route was essential for the movement of cattle and goods between the river valley and the rugged breaks to the south.

In the southern portion of the map, the Purgatoire River carves a deep, winding path through a series of named canyons, including Stage Cañon, Bent Cañon, and Iron Cañon. These natural features provided vital shelter and water for early ranching operations like the Taylor Ranch and provided necessary stopovers at locations such as Iron Springs. The intricate drainage system, marked by numerous arroyos and hollows, illustrates the complex topography of Otero and Las Animas counties before modern irrigation and land management altered the prairie floor.
