The South Fork New River carves a serpentine path through this section of the Blue Ridge, dictating the layout of early mountain settlements and transportation routes. The communities of Todd, Fleetwood, and Brownwood follow the river valley, connected by the historic Todd Railroad Grade Rd, which marks the path of former rail infrastructure through the highland terrain. High peaks such as Black Mtn, Bald Mtn, and Laurel Knob Mtn define the watershed boundaries, while numerous smaller streams like Meat Camp Cr and Elk Cr feed into the main river system.
