Tolar sits at a crossroads of ranch land and high plains drainage, centered around the intersection of US Highway 60/84 and North Roosevelt Road 8A. The landscape is defined by the ephemeral flows of the Llano Estacado, where Taiban Cr and Alamosa Cr cut through the terrain. Evidence of the area's early settlement is preserved at the Tolar Cem, situated just south of the highway near Roosevelt Road 12 N. The boundary between De Baca and Roosevelt Counties bisects this quadrangle, running north-to-south through the drainage of Sand Cr. This 2017 survey reveals a sparsely populated agricultural region where local landmarks like Stinking Spring and the depth of Long Canyon provide essential orientation for the cattle and rail economy of eastern New Mexico.
