The upper Chesapeake Bay and its labyrinth of tidal rivers define this landscape at the beginning of the twentieth century, where maritime trade and heavy rail converged. The Philadelphia Baltimore And Washington R.R. and Baltimore And Ohio R.R. cut through the western shore, connecting settlements like Magnolia, Abingdon, and Joppa. On the eastern shore, the economy relies on a network of landings and wharves such as Rockhall Landing, Quaker Wharf, and Harris Wharf, which served the rural interiors of Kent Co. and Queen Anne Co.
