San Isabel National Forest dominates this high-altitude landscape along the Sangre de Cristo Range, where three county lines meet. The terrain is defined by a series of sharp summits including Napoleon Peak, Park Mtn, and the titular Trinchera Peak, which marks the boundary between Costilla and Huerfano counties. This alpine environment is carved by numerous canyons such as Squirrel Canyon and Jarioso Canyon, while high-elevation basins like Beccerro Basin collect snowmelt into headwaters for the N Fork Purgatoire River and Trinchera Cr.
