Little Missouri National Grassland dominates this section of the North Dakota badlands, where the boundary between McKenzie and Golden Valley counties cuts through a complex drainage network. The landscape is defined by the erosive forces of numerous seasonal waterways, including Prairie Dog Creek and its northern fork, as well as Porcupine Creek and Horse Creek. These watercourses have carved out a rugged topography of draws and ridges typical of the Little Missouri river basin.
