Little Missouri National Grassland dominates this portion of western North Dakota, where the landscape is defined by the complex drainage systems of the badlands. The boundary between McKenzie County and Golden Valley County bisects the sheet, separating a network of deep coulees and seasonal waterways. Water moves through the terrain via several named features, including Prairie Dog Cr and its northern fork, as well as the prominent Dietz Draw and Porcupine Cr.
