Santa Cruz River valley life in the late 1930s is defined here by the thin corridor of water and rail that supported the ranching communities of southern Arizona. The Southern Pacific railroad and the Tucson-Nogales Highway parallel the river through the heart of the quadrangle, connecting the settlements of Arivaca Junction, Amado, Tubac, and Carmen. To the west, the landscape rises into the Coronado National Forest, where a network of ephemeral washes like Sopori Wash and Batamote Wash drain the high ground of the Cerro Colorado Mts and Sardina Peak.

Cultural landmarks are concentrated along the valley floor, most notably the Tumacacori National Monument and local centers of education such as Sopori Sch. Evidence of the region's ranching heritage is scattered throughout the drainages, including the Santa Lucia Ranch, "KX" Ranch, and the Moyza Ranch. Numerous wells and tanks, such as Red Spring and Sardina Dam, mark the vital water management required for survival in this arid terrain.
