The Continental Divide winds through this high-altitude landscape of Sweetwater County, Wyoming, as it was surveyed in the late 1950s. The terrain is a complex arrangement of dry basins and elevated flats, characterized by the expansive Black Rock Flat and the depressions of Alkali Basin. A rare and vital water source for the region is found at Twelvemile Well, an artesian spring located near the head of Twelvemile Gulch.

Transport and movement across this arid territory are limited to a network of Jeep Trails that skirt the edges of shifting Sand Dunes. The drainage patterns are defined by seasonal washes and draws, including Greasewood Wash and Tenmile Draw, which cut through the prominent Tenmile Rim. This 1958 survey captures the area as part of the Department of the Interior's Missouri River Basin development program, illustrating the topographic isolation and geological features of the Great Divide Basin.
