The remote corner where Kittson, Roseau, and Marshall counties converge is defined by a massive water management system. In this low-lying region, the natural flow of the Tamarac River is supplemented by a rigid grid of drainage projects, including State Ditch Number Ninty, Lateral Ditch Number Five, and Judicial Ditch Number Nineteen. This geometry of canals reflects the early 20th-century effort to reclaim northern Minnesota wetlands for agricultural use, creating a landscape where road and water often share the same straight path.
