The mountain slopes of Hawaii's northern coast are defined by the sprawling acreage of Umikoa (Kukaiau Ranch) and vast protected lands. This high-elevation terrain is segmented by numerous gulches, such as Kukaiau Gulch and Hanaipoe Gulch, which drop away from the steep cinder cones that dominate the skyline. Several prominent volcanic peaks, or pu'u, are mapped here including Puu Mali, Puu Ulaula, and the notable Iolehaehae.

Conservation boundaries are clearly established between the Hamakua Forest Reserve and the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve, divided in part by the Rock Wall Forest Reserve Boundary. Winding through this landscape is the remote Keanakolu Road, providing the primary transit route between isolated landmarks like Halepiula and Hololokawai. The map preserves the specific land divisions and ahupuaʻa boundaries, such as Paauhau and Koholalele, that represent traditional and historical land management in the region.
