Union and Gardar serve as the primary focal points of this northeastern North Dakota landscape, situated along the complex border where Cavalier, Pembina, and Walsh Counties meet. The terrain is defined by the winding paths of the North Branch Park River and Middle Branch Park River, which cut through the agricultural sections of Montrose, Gardar, Tiber, and Lampton. Traces of early settlement are preserved in the numerous burial sites and houses of worship scattered across the townships, including the West Zion Cem and Langemo Pioneer Cem, as well as Zion Ch and Pioneer Ch. Transportation and industry in the early 1970s are marked by the Burlington Northern railroad line and various Gravel Pits. To the south, the Charles C Cook State Game Management Area indicates a shift toward conservation and public land use amidst the region's productive farmlands.
