The High Plains of Western Kansas are defined by the dendritic drainage patterns of the Walnut Creek system. This 2018 survey illustrates the headwaters and seasonal tributaries that carve through the landscape along the Lane County and Ness County border. The topography is dominated by the converging paths of the N Fork Walnut Cr and the Middle Fork Walnut Cr, which dictate the local terrain and the placement of the section-line road network.
