Little Missouri National Grassland encompasses this stretch of the North Dakota badlands, where the drainage systems of Wannagan Cr and Crooked Cr carve through the high plains. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation shifts, including the prominent East Twin Butte and the natural pass at Buffalo Gap. While much of the area is public land, evidence of early homesteading remains in the form of the Lohmann Cem and the naming of local routes such as Westerheim Rd.
