The Payette National Forest encompasses this high-elevation backcountry, protected within the sprawling boundaries of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. The landscape is defined by the drainage systems of Whimstick Creek and Wapiti Creek, where high mountain meadows such as Wapiti Meadows and Moose Meadows provide breaks in the heavy timber. This 2024 survey documents a primitive network of trails that serve as the primary human infrastructure in the area, including the McCalla Creek Trl and the Cold Meadows Trl.
