About this map

The Connecticut River and Millers River define the industrial and transport corridors of north-central Massachusetts in the late 19th century. Surveyed in 1887, the landscape is heavily influenced by the intersecting lines of the Fitchburg R. R., the New London Northern R. R., and the Boston and Albany R. R.. These rail networks connected river towns like Millers Falls, Erving, and Orange, facilitating the growth of manufacturing centers while smaller agricultural outposts like North Orange and Warwick remained centered around their upland village commons.
