Weches and the settlement of Weeping Mary anchor this landscape along the border of Cherokee and Houston Counties. The area is defined by the winding course of the Neches River, which feeds a complex system of oxbows and backwaters including Schoechler Lake, Pearman Lake, and Horseshoe Lake. Much of the southern terrain is protected within the Davy Crockett National Forest, where a network of recreational paths like the Hardwood Trail, Ravine Trail, and Big Pine Trail surround Mission Lake.
