Everglades National Park covers the vast majority of this landscape, where the freshwater sawgrass prairies and mangrove forests meet the brackish waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The terrain is dominated by complex hydrologic patterns, from the interior waters of West Lake and Cuthbert Lake to the tidal influence at Snake Bight. State Road SR-9336 provides the primary terrestrial access into this wilderness, winding toward the coast where named features like Noble Hammock and The Lungs mark specific ecosystems.
