About this map

The agricultural uplands west of the Black River valley are defined here by a network of rural roads and scattered hamlets in the mid-2010s. Small residential clusters like West Lowville and Windecker serve as focal points for the surrounding farmsteads, connected by thoroughfares such as Number Three Rd and Boshart Rd. The landscape is deeply incised by watercourses, most notably Mill Creek, Negro Creek, and Stony Creek, which drain the plateau toward the east. Family history is preserved in several small burial grounds, including Gallup Cem and Fairview Cem, while the southern edge of the map reaches the periphery of West Martinsburg. The layout of these roads, including Griffith Rd and Yancey Rd, reflects generations of land use in Lewis County, where the transition from forest to pasture is marked by the sharp relief of the creek valleys.
