Westplains is situated in the high plains of Logan County, characterized by a highly structured grid of section lines and county roads. This 2013 survey reveals the agricultural and industrial layout of the region, where the Little Hoot Oil Field in the northeast corner represents the local energy economy. The landscape is carved by several ephemeral drainage systems, including Brush Creek, Twomile Creek, and Cedar Creek, which create natural relief against the rectilinear road network of CO Road 60 and CO Road 54. These creek beds provide the primary topographic variation in an area otherwise dominated by the Public Land Survey System divisions of t010n r055w and t010n r054w. The mapping of these watercourses and road intersections provides a clear look at land management and rural infrastructure in northeastern Colorado.
