About this map

Piru Creek Wild and Scenic River defines the western edge of this rugged corridor through the Los Padres National Forest and Angeles National Forest. The landscape is dominated by the massive water infrastructure of the Governor Edmund G Brown West Branch California Aqueduct, which feeds into the Elderberry Forebay and the northern reaches of Castaic Lake. High points such as Whitaker Peak, Townsend Peak, and Whitaker Summit rise above a complex network of drainage systems, including Palomas Canyon and Santa Felicia Canyon. Local travel is marked by the historical path of Ridge Route Rd and the more modern alignment of the Interstate, while isolated outposts like Oak Flats and Martins sit within the steep terrain. Traces of historical resource extraction remain visible via the Gillette Mine Trl near Cienaga Canyon.
